I've wondered if the inability of polygraphs to catch people who prevarication comfortably is one of the reasons that LE is a top profession for sociopaths.

A friend had a 2d career after he was a police officeholder, doing vocalization analysis. He claims information technology'due south accurate for detecting lies and so long every bit the person knows they are lying and is experiencing stress. He did say that polygraphs are bullshit the operator can rattle a guy though.

Polygraphs are unable to discover anything except iv next to useless measurements of the functioning of your nervous organization.

Inquiry how they piece of work and what actual scientists say most them, non "polygraphers" who like to pretend to be scientists simply are just cops/feds who went to a polygraph form.. They are total junk like water witching and tea leaf reading. Voice stress is even more retarded and proven simulated.

Any endeavor to detect untruthfulness based on stress reactions will not catch sociopaths reliably. That was my indicate. And so a system that uses that every bit a gate is letting them right in.

Except polygraphs don't really attempt to detect untruthfulness based on stress reactions, which is my point. They measure upper and lower breathing rate, heart rate, and sweating in the fingertips.

The trained monkey operator and then asks a serial of questions and "scores" question sets using a simple mathematical formula scoring "control" questions[response is an assumed lie. if you reply incorrect you will be coached into lying] against "relevant" questions[questions they want to know the answer to]. More "response" to the controls is assumed truthful, more response to the "relevants" is assumed a lie.

Someone who experienced no stress about lying at all would actually show "inconclusive" on a polygraph because they would have a straight baseline reaction to all questions without enough deviationand ruin the scoring system. An inconclusive is not a pass, and they will re-run the examination until the employing agency decides to stop. Very few LE agencies volition take a failed or inconclusive polygraph because the polygraph is the perfect administrative cover for "Encounter, we investigated this guy!"

The commonly used relevant/control pre-employment screening examination detects absolutely nothing and can be easily manipulated(fifty-fifty unintentionally) by both the ambassador and the person being tested.

The only polygraph examination with a hint of validity is an incredibly rarely used screening called a "Guilty Knowledge Exam" where an investigator prepares a multiple choice question ready containing data known only to the perpetrator of a crime so has an examiner read the questions blind without knowing which piece of noesis indicates guilt. A consistent reaction to that information by the subject would indicate knowledge.

So, for instance, the examiner would say "Which of the post-obit calibers was used to shoot the victm? 9mm? .45? .44? .357?" A consistent stress reaction to hearing "9mm" would indicate guilt if that was the caliber and that knowledge should not be available to the subject.
